Margherita Natali is a Programme Officer in the Border Security and Management Unit of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT). Prior to joining UNOCT in 2019, she spent more than eight years working in the fields of counter terrorism, countering cybercrime and personal data protection policies at UNODC and the IAEA in Vienna, as well as with the Italian National Police (Arma dei Carabinieri) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She currently oversees the implementation of technical assistance for selected beneficiaries under the Integrated Border Stability Mechanism in West Africa and leads efforts to promote the responsible use of biometrics and ethical management of personal data in border management to counter terrorism.
Margherita holds an LLM in International Criminal Law and has two years of experience as an Associate Professor of Data Protection Law at the University of Vienna, Austria. She has also contributed to academic programmes at the University of Manchester (UK), the Naif Arab University for Security Sciences (KSA), LUISS University (Italy), and the ECRIM – European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics.
