Sixteen men and two women being smuggled into Italy in inhumane conditions

A seemingly routine inspection at the Csörnyeföld rest area on the M7 motorway turned into a shocking discovery. The patrols stopped a truck from Bulgaria to Italy, which according to the documents was transporting insulation material. However, the cargo was suspicious at first glance: the Styrofoam boards strangely surrounded the cargo area, as if they were hiding something. At first, the uniformed officers expected a significant shipment of smuggled cigarettes, but when they opened the side of the vehicle, they were hit by a strong, pungent smell. The source of the smell quickly explained the phenomenon: behind the Styrofoam boards was a corridor-like cavity lined with OSB boards, where 18 people were crammed together and were given only one barrel to relieve themselves on the long journey.

The financial guards immediately notified the police, who took the driver, his passenger and the 18 people into custody. The passengers, who identified themselves as Iranian and Iraqi Kurds, were unable to credibly prove the legality of their stay in Hungary, so they were dealt with in accordance with the current Hungarian legislation.

The two human smugglers were detained by the Zala County Police Headquarters, criminal proceedings were initiated against them, and the court ordered their arrest.
