Over 100,000 cigarettes hidden, some on the body of a Romanian citizen, and goods likely to be counterfeit removed from the illegal circuit by border police

Border police officers carried out BLITZ-type actions on the national roads in Giurgiu and Dolj counties, stopping several means of transport for control.

They were driven by Romanian, Turkish and Bulgarian citizens, aged between 38 and 45, and traveled on routes such as Bulgaria–Romania, Turkey-Romania and Bulgaria–Czech Republic.

Following the checks carried out on the means of transport, a total quantity of 107,300 cigarettes (5,365 packs), without tax stamps and with Bulgarian tax stamps, were discovered. They were hidden in various compartments of the vehicles, on the body of a Romanian citizen and in luggage, concealed among clothing items.

Since the people involved were unable to present documents of origin for the cigarettes discovered, the entire quantity, estimated at approximately 159,600 lei, was seized for confiscation and impounded at the headquarters of the competent institutions.

In the case, a misdemeanor fine was applied and criminal cases were filed regarding the commission of the crime of possession by any person, outside the fiscal warehouse or the marketing on the territory of Romania of excise products subject to marking, according to this title, without being marked or marked improperly, or with false markings over the limit of 10,000 cigarettes , following which, upon completion of the investigations, legal solutions will be proposed by the prosecutor’s office.

Also, on 15.05.2026, border police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Inspectorate – Giurgiu Border Police Sector, together with colleagues from the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Service – Operational Support Department, stopped three buses traveling on DN 5, on the Turkey-Romania route, for control.

Following the checks carried out, over 2,080 clothing and perfumery items susceptible to counterfeiting were discovered, belonging to Turkish citizens and a Polish citizen, drivers and passengers, who were unable to present documents of provenance or authenticity.

The goods, estimated at a total value of  650,000  lei, were seized for further investigation and placed in the institutions’ crime scene.

Currently, investigations are being carried out against the persons in question for the crime of ” placing into circulation a product bearing a registered trademark for identical or similar products and which prejudices the owner of the registered trademark “, and upon their completion, the necessary legal solutions will be proposed.
