Turkish driver arrested for migrant smuggling, detected by Romanian border police

Romanian order police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Service and the Giurgiu Border Police Sector recently conducted a BLITZ-type operation that led to the discovery of a migrant smuggling attempt. During a routine control on DN 51, officers stopped a Turkish-registered tractor unit and semi-trailer transporting furniture from Turkey to Belgium.

Upon inspection, authorities found a male individual hidden in the truck’s cabin beneath a mattress. The man was discovered to be in possession of an expired Turkish document and lacked a visa.

Investigations were carried out by the Bureau for Combating Illegal Migration and Cross-Border Crime, leading to the initiation of a criminal case against the Turkish driver for migrant smuggling and against the passenger for fraudulent border crossing, in accordance with the Criminal Code.

In a coordinated effort with Bulgarian border authorities, the Turkish citizen was handed over to the Bulgarian officials, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between Romanian and Bulgarian border police to combat illegal migration and smuggling activities.
