Mr. Thomas (Tommy) Sutton is part of CBP’s Office of International Affairs and serves as the Regional Attaché based in The Hague, Netherlands since August 2021. Mr. Sutton brings experience in wide range of border security areas, including information sharing, targeting approaches, capability development, arranging agreements, and resource deployment.
Prior to this role, Mr. Sutton served as the Director of the Europe Regional Affairs, leading six CBP regional attachés and a military senior advisor while providing analysis and recommendations to executives regarding European geopolitical events. His overseas experience also includes serving as an immigration advisor and acting attaché in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Sutton began his government career with CBP at the Port of New York/Newark as a frontline CBP officer. He later spent eight years at CBP’s National Targeting Center (NTC) in multiple roles. During this time, he supervised a team of deployed liaisons across eight time zones and represented CBP interests to many partners.
As a CBP Attaché, Mr. Sutton focuses on promoting and facilitating secure global trade and travel in partnership with counterpart customs, immigration and border police agencies. This engagement includes strengthening border cooperation, enhancing operational relationships, expertise exchanges, and increasing information sharing, especially as it pertains to countering irregular migration to the US southwest border and stopping the importation of illicit drugs and their precursors. Mr. Sutton’s area of responsibility includes Denmark, Finland, France, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. Mr. Sutton also serves as a senior CBP point of contact for cooperation with Europol.
Mr. Sutton was recently named as a World Customs Organization 2024 Certificate of Merit recipient for successful engagement and information sharing to effectively counter illicit drugs from entering the US.
