Prof. Güngör graduated from Kuleli Military High School in 1987 and the Turkish Military Academy in 1991. He earned M.A. degree from Boğaziçi University and Ph.D. degree at Bilkent University from the Dept. of International Relations. He was Visiting Fellow at Princeton University in 2011-2012. Güngör was appointed as full Professor at Başkent University in 2019.
Güngör was lecturer at the Turkish Military Academy and at the Azerbaijan Military Academy. He served as the International Relations Advisor to the Chief of Gen. Staff in 2008-2011, the Chief of Staff of the NATO Centre of Excellence-Defense Against Terrorism (COE-DAT) in 2012-2014, and as the Military Advisor to the Turkish Army Commander in 2014-2015. He served at ISAF Mission in Afghanistan between 2010-2011. He retired from the TAF in 2015 as Senior Colonel.
He has been working as the Director of the School of Foreign Languages at Başkent University since 2015. He teaches at Başkent University, Turkish Military Academy, NATO School, COE-DAT, Partnership for Peace Training Center and Anadolu Agency News Academy.
He has a book and numerous chapters and articles in the field of International Security. Güngör is the chief editor of the Defense Against Terrorism Review (DATR).
