Dr. Richard Warnes

Dr. Richard Warnes is a self-employed research consultant with a focus on terrorism and security. He has previous experience in the fields of defence research, counter-terrorist policing, military operations and international relief and human rights. He previously served in an Army Field Intelligence Team during the warring faction period in Bosnia and then in the Metropolitan Police, including Special Branch and Counter Terrorism Command in the early 2000s. As a civilian contractor, he conducted in country field evaluations of a security capacity-building programme for local forces in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2008-2014. More recently he was involved in helping to professionalise wargaming at the Iraqi Staff College, Rustamiyah, Baghdad. He regularly acts as an academic advisor and presenter at the NATO Centre of Excellence – Defence Against Terrorism (COE-DAT) in Ankara, Turkiye and writes and lectures on aspects of terrorism and security for the UK MOD, NATO and the EU. He has a PhD on human factors in effective Counter-Terrorism, a Masters in Criminal Justice, and a first degree in International Politics.
